Can't find server after your generalized instructions- am totally lost-why
am I trying??????

Windows Mail cannot access http email accounts like Hotmail.
To access Hotmail accounts, you have to use POP3.

Use port 587 for SMTP (outgoing)

With the newer Windows Live Mail, it's much easier.

You have to give us something to work with. I see no detailed problem
description or copy of an error message in this thread from you.

Do you have an existing email address? If so, what is the part of
your email address after the @ symbol? That part represents your
mail service provider.
Your mail provider will typically have a web page that shows how to
set up an email program. If you need more help, tell us the name of
your email service provider. If you currently don't have an email
address, we can help with that also.

What does Instant Messenger have to do with Windows Mail? There
should be no interaction.

Do you get an error message when you try to send or receive? If so,
right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.
