No internet after Sleep mode

Since installing SP1 I can't establish a broadband (DSL) connection after
coming out of Sleep mode. Even if I log off and back on I still can't
connect.

I've tried disconnecting before going into sleep, but that hasn't worked.

Diagnostics finds no problems and my power options are unchanged.

I must either reboot or go into hibernation mode to get the connection back.

There are no issues when I use hibernate.

I've searched around and found no solutions, any help would be appreciated.

That, my friend is quite alarming. Do you connect directly to your DSL
modem with a cable (Cat 5), or do you use a router?

If you use a router, is it wireless or do you use a Cat 5 to connect
to your router? What brand is your router and how old is it? Have you
ever done a firmware upgrade on your router?

What happens if you reset your DSL modem?

Do you have any other computers that are maintaining a persistent
connection?

3. There is only 1 PC on the modem or on the connection

Well, that certainly eliminates a lot of troubleshooting. Bob posted a
good article that may be worth your time with step-by-step
instructions.

I find it improbable that it is something in your Windows power
settings because it is unlikely that any update would have changed
your personal settings. Nonetheless, the behavior is as if the LAN
connection to your DSL modem were asleep -- something that should
never happen.

It looks to me that that article covers most everything. I'd currently
be suspecting the settings on your Network Devices and would
experiment with that.

Go to Control Panel and search for "View Network Connections." Right
click on your "Local Area Connections" and do a "Properties." Select
the "Configure..." button and the "Power Management" tab. Try checking
or unchecking the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save
power" check box. If it is checked, then I think in your case, I would
prefer it to be unchecked. However, if it is already unchecked, then
go ahead and check it. Restart and experiment with that box checked/
unchecked.

Two other possibilities: 1) your PC may come with some original
equipment manufacture (OEM) software that also controls power
management - that software might either need to be uninstalled or
updated, 2) I cannot eliminate the possibility that your DSL provider
is actually to blame - it can be hell to go through their tech
support, but it could be a last ditch effort. It could also be that
your DSL modem is failing.

There are some power management settings in the BIOS, but none that I
know of that disable the Network Interface Card (NIC).

I can imagine how frustrating this must be. It may be that updated
drivers or a BIOS update are needed as well. Though it appears that
the problem occurred only after installing SP1, it can't be said with
certainty that SP1 caused the problem; but, if it did, updating the
drivers and BIOS might make sense.

If you don't give up first, let me know how it goes. I'm interested in
the outcome.

I have the same problem....but slightly different too. I have a laptop
running Vista Ultimate SP1. I hibernate my machine and upon turning it back
on...cannot connect to wireless networks. Any wireless network. I connect
to it according to the wireless connection window...but can't get an ip
address. I have updated my router firmware (this happens on a brand new
router as well at my home) and my wireless drivers. Nothing I do changes it
except to restart the computer. I've tried ipconfig release/renew
functions...I've tried manually disabling the wireless adapter...I've tried
repair...nothing. It's quite mind boggling really.

I had what possibly was a similar problemn recently and came across this page
in my hunt for a solution. My net access is PC... ethernet cable... cable
modem... wider world.

On waking from sleep (not hibernate) I had limited access to the modem but
was unable to access anything beyond wihout turning the modem off then on
again.

I managed to solve the problem by going to the network and sharing centre
then selecting manage network connections. From there I right clicked on
local area conection and then selected properties.

Next I chose configure and then the power management tab. Finally I
unchecked the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
check box.

I did all of this only yesterday but it seems to have solved the problem so
far.
