Whenever I attempt to access microsoft or windows update, the following error
comes up on the site.

"Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or
installed on your computer. To continue:

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)"

If you choose this option, it runs through a download, install and register
process. Then, it returns you to the original error screen. If you restart
the system, the same mesage still appears. I cannot find any reference to
this particular message in the troubleshooter or Microsoft knowledge base.
Advice?

I had exactly the same problem. I fixed this by doing what some recommended
in a previous thread, which is....

Other users have had success with re-registering the MSXML3.DLL
1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type: regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL
Press okay
