I just bought a computer with VISTA on it.
I connected to my network and join to my domain.
I can ping the server's ip address but server cannot ping this workstation.

I also cannot ping vista workstation from any other computers with xp.

I can go on internet and have no problem.

This is the only vista workstation I have.

I also cannot install sql2k on it. It errors out complaining about
compatibility.

I would appreciate if someone please help.

Sounds like Vista's firewall is blocking pings. Why do you want to
ping it anyway?

Well it sounds like SQL 2000 doesn't run on Vista. I haven't tried it,
but then I have SQL 2005.

The Windows Firewall will, by default, reject incoming ICMPs. This is by
design: it's to prevent Denial-of-Service attacks.

To let your Vista machine respond to ping, you need to make the Network
"Private" instead of Public. This is configured in the Network and Sharing
Centre. You also need to turn File Sharing "ON". If File sharing is off, the
machine does not respond to ping (I guess this is part of the DoS
protection).

That's right. Microsoft does not support running SQL Server 2000 on Vista.
Nt only is it not "supported" in teh official sense, SQL Server 2000 does
not run very well on Vista, you will have many problems even if you can
manage to get it installed somehow. To run SQL Server on Vista, you will
need to upgrade to SQL Server 2005. See:
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/sqlonvista.mspx

You can, of course, contnue to connect to SQL Server 2000 databases running
on other machines.

Hope it helps,
