No program folders at all in start menu

No program folders at all in start menu. Noticed about a week ago they
disappeared.
Yet when you right click on the start menu and select open, every program
folder that should be there is in the windows explorer window that opens. I
don't have a clue how to make all those folders disappear without deleting
them, let alone making them reappear. I checked everything on my laptop and
I see no way to turn them off.
I has got to be something simple in Windows Vista but I can neither find or
explain.
What can this be, i.e. setting and how do I turn it off or back on?

Hello James,

Strange, when you open the Start Menu, are you clicking on "All
Programs" at the bottom to see the program files?

Are they there when you right click on the Start Menu and select "Open
All" ?
