On the 16th I posted a problem, which I believe, is related to the latest
dnload to fixes to Word, Excel etc. Is there any MVP out there that can
recommend a "fix"?
My post is titled "Registry Errors"

Thanks

1. Registry cleaners have never been accurate tools and they will never
be.

2. Did you check whether "C:\program
files\support.com\Backup\MI\Misc.Exc" actually exists? If it exists,
then your registry scanner is wrong. This is not unusual with this kind
of entry because very often, they assume that the icon index (, 6) is a
part of the filename. Which is obviously wrong.

3. I don't have any \Program Files\Support or \Program Files\Support.com
folder on any system here. So something is wrong with your installation,
I guess. Support.com is probably something that has been installed by
the manufacturer of your computer. This is probably something used to
restore your configuration but probably not a folder from which your
applications should be launched. You should have a look at your system's
documentation regarding this.

Regards.

Patrick:
Thank you for the response. "Yes" I did go to the folder as I mentioned in
my orginal post. It's there. So, you believe that "Dell" installed this
folder. OK, now the other question. Can I delete this entire folder if it
really doesn't need to be there? I don't see any .exe files or dll files in
these folsers, so I "Assume" it where files are placed during an Update.
What's your opinion?

Thanks again.

I don't know if Dell are using support.com but thi is a question that
should be directed to them (maybe there's something in your system
documentation about this folder). I would first rename the folder and
see whether everything is working correctly. After a while, if nothing
serious happens, you could consider deleting or archiving this folder.

However, since HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DETFile\DefaultIcon is pointing to a
file in this folder, there *is* something wrong with the installation.
Normally, this entry should point to the actual file which is usually:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE11\MSOICONS.EXE.
You should reset the few entries pointed to by your registry scanner to
the correct value before doing anything else.

Thank you for your very good advice. I did EXACTLY as you recommended. I
renamed the folder, ran the machine all day. Put it through "alot" of
different functions. I didn't see any issues. Ran Norton and it didn't see
any problem. I'm going to keep it this way for a couple of days, and if all
goes well, then it's going to get the shift delete.

Thanks again.

P.S. "Have you EVER tried talking to the tech. people at Dell, like in
India. "NOT".
