no sign of updates download or install

I have Automatic Updates on my Windows XP SP3 computer set to notify me of
updates, not to download and install them. I received the recent
notification, and about 20 minutes ago I clicked on the shield and then
clicked to download the updates. The shield disappeared, and the hourglass
flickered a couple times, and then nothing. Normally I'm asked if the
downloads should be installed.

How do I find out if the updates have been installed?

Thank you!

Jo-Anne

Updates are not downloaded or the “Automatic Updates” icon does not display the status of
downloads when you enable the Automatic Updates service
http://www.support.microsoft.com/kb/910340

During periods of heavy download traffic, the Automatic Updates service can reschedule
download requests on a day-to-day basis. This rescheduling can occur over several days.

Thank you, TaurArian! I checked the Windowsupdate.log after reading the
Microsoft article, and it showed activity (of some sort) at the time I was
trying to download and then again a couple hours later. Still nothing
downloaded, however, as far as I can tell.

I'm not sure what to do at this point. I'm going to have the computer turned
off for a couple weeks after tomorrow and don't know if I should try to
manually download the latest updates or let it go until I get back to it, at
which time there'll no doubt be more updates.

I guess I'll wait til tomorrow to see what happens.

Do you think it would be worthwhile to leave the computer on overnight?

Thank you again!

If you're concerned, run a manual scan for the updates and install.

Addendum--

I got impatient and went to the Microsoft Updates page and let Microsoft
download and install the updates. Interestingly, just as the updates were
starting to install, the shield icon appeared in the system tray, telling me
there were updates to install. After I restarted the computer, I saw the
shield again as the computer was finishing booting, and then it disappeared.
So I guess I'm up-to-date now.

Thank you, TaurArian! I've kept a copy of the Microsoft article so I can
refer to it again if needed.

Absent any Errors in your windowsupdate.log, you may be seeing a delay
caused by excessive demand on the servers. It can take up to 7 days for all
Automatic Update users to get new updates when so many have been released.

You can try downloading/installing the updates via Windows/Microsoft Update:
Understand that by doing so, you're pushing all the Automatic Updates users
further back in the queue (which may explain, at least in part, why
Automatic Updates hasn't brought them in for you yet).

Thank you, Robear! I'm going to be away for a couple weeks, so I decided not
to wait. I did go to the update page and let Microsoft download the updates.
