Hey LOST--

You uninstalled and reinstalled what preciesly? The sound driver? The OS?
I'd reinstall the sound driver --you don't need to uninstall it, and unless
you have a very old sound card, it shouldn't be having any particular Vista
problems.

Also here is my routine "no sound" physical exam:

Touch base with this checklist:

I Can't Hear Sound from My Vista PC:

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...f42d21033.mspx

and this one:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...0253a1033.mspx

My personal ck. list:

1) Check connections from PC to your speakers and any other sound related
peripheral.
2) Ck Control Panel>Playback Tab>Rt. click Speakers and hit items on
context menu including Speaker Configuration and Test them; Click the
Properties button (lower rt. corner)>check the levels tab and make sure
nothing is preventing sound there particular the "Master" lever at the top.
Also on the Advanced tab check that the appropriate pull down menu item is
selected.
3) Get newest driver appropriate to your sound card by visiting the Sound
Card's website.

Some of these principles apply to Vista:

Resources for Troubleshooting Sound Problems in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307918/en-us

Good luck,

CH

THANKS CHAD. IDID EVERYTHING YOU SUDJESUED ALREADY. INSTALLING THE UPDATED
DRIVERS FOR MY SOUND CARD WAS WHAT FIXED THE PROBLIM THE FIRST TIME. BUT THE
NEXT DAY THE SOUND WAS GONE. EVERYTHING IN THE TESTING SHOWS THAT THE SYSTEM
IN WORKING. THE SPEAKER TEST SHOWED SOUND COMING OUT OF THE SPEAKERS BUT
THERE WAS NO SOUND COMING OUT .
GOT ANY OTHER IDEAS?

Look carefully thru ALL the sound settings, any advanced, etc. to see if
some obscure setting has been muted.

LOST--

I included everything I'd do to restore sound. Besides the driver, I listed
everything else I'd check on your system. Make sure you check each of them,
and if you have, maybe someone else will suggest something that works.

Good luck,

CH

Some cards have reconfigurable jacks so that the jack marked "Out" can
be something else entirely. If there is a "Driver" control somewhere
that's been missed it is possible the config is simply not what it
claims to be, so I would try all the sockets on the back panel and all
on the front panel and same again with headphones, just in case...

I had this problem, and downloaded a realtek driver which fixed the problem -
did you try that already?

Kind of puts you to something mechanical. First I would try using the
onboard sound. Then check the connection on the computer, then the speaker,
a new wire, plug in an old speaker system etc.

Don't know if this is any help. I had the same problem with Vista. New
install. NO SOUND. Downloaded the Realtek AC97 Vista driver and still no
sound. Everything showed as working but no sound out of the speakers. Took it
to a computer repair shop. Same problems. Informed me it could be my
motherboard driver for Vista. Problem no Vista driver for my motherboard
sound on any website. Solution and a cheap quick one. Purchase a USB Vista
compatable sound card from Ebay for A$7.00.
Inserted speakers and microphone into it, sound, no more problems and much
cheaper than replacing my motherboard.
Hope this helps.
