What's up with messenger 2009? I am always having to do a repair because
there is no sound when I sign back on. I just did the update on Nov. 4. Vista
Home Premium sp2 with IE7. Thanks in advance

Greetings,

Which sounds are you referring to? The Messenger sounds themselves (like when you receive an
instant message), or in a voice conversation?

I'm going to assume the former. However, what exactly are you repairing? and does it start
working after that?

yes it is all of the sounds in messenger and yes I get the sounds back when I
do a repair. Now my new problem is that I get the "windows live
communications platform" error message, and then messenger shuts down and I
have to re-sign on. So now I am doing a repair with that quite often. How
can that be fixed?

I'm actually getting the same thing on my Windows Live Messenger. I also
have bigger problems. I shall try to explain:

My computer has Windows 7 on it and is hooked up to my TV via HDMI input. I
know that it isn't my computer as I can hear everything else on it just fine.
My problem is that Windows Live Messenger refuses to play any sounds. I
downloaded it from downloads.live.com. It gave me Windows Live Essentials
which I cannot uninstall or repair (more on this later).

I thought it could have been because of the settings in Windows Live
Messenger, however I checked those another appears to be 'muted.' One thing
I did notice is that when I looked at my buddy's Windows Live Messenger
installed on Windows Vista, he has a lot of sound options to choose from,
whereas I have none. I also read on the web that this may be due to corrupt
sound files. I decided to repair/uninstall Windows Live Essentials hoping
that a repair or a fresh installation would give me these sound files. When
I went into the control panel to uninstall Windows Live Essentials, it
'attempts' to uninstall, however it get no confirmation nor do I get any
error. The program just stays in the list unaffected.

I downloaded this program from off the web that 'kills' Windows Live
Essentials and it worked to my satisfaction. I then went in to reinstall
Windows Live Messenger which it did. I still cannot hear any sounds from my
Windows Live Messenger which is very annoying as I don't know when my
contacts are speaking to me.

Also for your information, when I try to go in and assign an mp3 as the
sound for, oh let's say, 'new instant message,' in the Windows Live Banner at
the bottom of the open file screen, it shows a "Error loading sound file." I
know for a fact that this file is not corrupt as I can play it many other
ways on my computer (using VLC is just one way).

I would really appreciate if I could get an answer for this as I am now
relying on skype, however I do like Windows Live Messener better for the sake
of emais.

Regards,
Eddi
