No sound alert with new email

I upgraded to windows live messenger 8.0 from version 7.5. After updating to
version 8.0 I no longer receive sound alerts when new email arrives. A drop
down box does appear when the new email arrives but no sound can be heard.
All other sounds in messenger work properly. All boxes are checked to play
sound alerts when new email arrives and all sounds on my computer are working
correctly. I tried uninstalling messenger and reinstalling. I reassociated
the sound files to fit the new profile for version 8.0. All alerts and
settings are set up properly. Anyone have a solution? You can contact me at

No help from anyone yet. Messenger tech support said they cannot help me but
a fix is in the works because it is a know problem affecting others. The
next version of messenger will have the correct fix. I guess we have to wait
it out.

Hi All,

In Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2, I downloaded and installed
the new Windows Live Messenger 8.1-beta version.

Open Windows Live Messenger after installing it and logging in. Click on
Tools then Options.

On the Left, click on Alerts and Sounds. You can change that Sounds to
anything you like, including using Sound Recorder to record your Voice with
meaning messages and saving those messages and attaching them to a specific
event, like New Mail and when you get Mail, have it announce in your own
Voice, "You've Got Mail", or "You got additional E-mails", or even "You've
just received more E-mails".

Works every time.
