No sound device after Service pack2 installed

I recently downloaded and installed the update for XP which was called
Service pack2 and have subsequently found that I now have NO sound on my
computer - infact no sound device is recognised at all when I go into audio
devices in the control panel! Has anyone else had this happen?? If so how do
I get my sound back? Please help. Thanks

I would suggest you check:
control panel\administrative tools\services: look for windows audio service
it should be started and automatic.

control panel\system\hardware\device manager look for the sound item, an
icon could indicate the problem with a driver

Jim,
I'm having the same problem. I did the first thing you said and it told me
that I couldn't start the audio because it was being used by something else.
I tried the second thing and when I opened the device manager, it was
completly blank. Is there anything else you would suggest? Thanks.

I suggest uninstalling Service Pack 2 and then trying the installation

how can i get sound back on my computer. it is showing that i have c-media
AC97 Audio device, before i used the update it was sis audio driver. please
help me, i was using windows me and upgrade to xp service paack 2
