no sound from my headphones

Hi

I'm using windows vista..the headphones have been working fine up until this
week. Now when I plug them in, not sound comes out of the headphones, just
the pc. What can I so that sounds automatically comes out of the headphones
when I plug them in?

Do they work on other devices?

yes.. the headphones work on other things..I've tried several pairs of
headphones, none work..it's as if the pc doesn't realise that they've been
plugged in.
