No sound, no keyboard input

I have been told that Vista updates have caused problems like this. My
Device Manager is missing both "Keyboards" and "Sound, video and game
controllers". I have no sound and my keyboard ignores input. I can only
type by activating the accessibility option to have an "On-Screen Keyboard".
(I'm entering this using an older XP laptop) My restore points have been
flushed by recent activity, so I cannot go back to before the last Windows
Update. Help????

It sounds (or rather doesn't sound ) pretty bad. You could try plugging in
another keyboard eg a standard ps/2 keyboard rather than a usb keyboard or
vice versa.

You may be able to gather more information on what happened by using the
mouse only (if still functioning), and / or try rolling back drivers via
Device Manager, or uninstalling devices and letting windows redetect and
reinstall them.

My Vista computer is an Acer laptop with Home Premium on it. I'll see if I
can get the drivers back using the CDs that came with the computer.
