No Sound Playing MPEG files

I am running Vista Home Premium 64bit SP1 and noticed that when I play
and MPEG files I have no sound. I though this might be a problem with
the Microsoft media player but I get the same result with another
media. The files used to play just fine and I do not know when the
problem occurred.

Any suggestions on what to do would be appreciated.
Al

It is possible that a needed codec (compressor/decompressor file) has
become corrupt, or been deleted.

This article, among others that can be located via http://google.com,
may help you solve the problem...

You might want to check your soundcard settings. Mine switched back to
"speaker output". Used to the digital output, I had no sound at first at all
until I saw the change in the settings by SP1.

This happens when codec packs have been installed...with codec pack
yuou only need to install the ones you need at the time...

Not a bad point, considering that the system should have had fully
functional MPEG playback previous to any codec pack installation.

You can check installed MPEG codecs using WMP's Help:About:Technical Support
Information menu tool.
