Assuming you uninstalled sigmatel from Device Manager, restart your computer
and let it reinstall.
Regarding your problem with updates.

Uninstall the recent updates. Restart. If this solves your problem,
reinstall one at a time, testing as you go, until you find the culprit.
For future reference, do not automatically install updates. Choose the
option “Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them”

sorry, i should have been more clear with my problem. The trouble is that the
windows updates do not install on my pc, i keep getting error codes. Anyhow a
microsoft tech that was trying to help told me that sigmatel might be the
cause of the problem and to uninstall it, leaving me with no sound. I am
still waiting to hear back from them to correct this problem

What firewall, anti-virus application or security suite is installed? There
are some that cause problems which do not appear immediately.

hi Bob. I just have the windows vista firewall that came with the computer,
and i run the shield deluxe 2008 as an anti-virus program. I also have spy
sweeper which i run on occasion. As for my problem with no sound, i did a
system restore and got the sound back while i wait for the microsoft tech to
reply. Thanks for trying to help.
