No sound using Webcam (Vista Ultimate)

Hi

I've just purchased a new Dell Dimension 9200 with Vista Ultimate. My sound
and webcam both work fine independently. However, when I try and use Windows
Live Messenger to have a Web Chat there is no sound. The camera is present
but I can't hear the other-end and they can't hear me.

The Sound Sliders are greyed out.

My sound card is a Sigmatel HD Audio codec.

Anyone got any ideas? This is really annoying as it works well with Skype
so I'm not sure what the problem is!

Having the same problem with Vista and Sigmatel audio.

Are you by any chance connecting a headset with separate headphone and
microphone jacks? The only way I can get the sound and video to work
simultaneously with Vista and Sigmatel audio is to connect only the
headphone jack and to use the laptop's built-in microphone. If an external
microphone is connected, Vista switches to that until the computer is
rebooted (unplugging the microphone does not switch back to the internal one
and, according to Dell technical support, that is the intended behavior,
which is quite weird).

So, this is either an issue with Messenger getting confused about speakers
and microphones, or it is an issue with the Sigmatel hardware and/or drivers
in Vista.

Hi,
I have a new 9200 also and have the same problem, with time i finaly
got the test to work but it still does not work in real time, i tried just
about everything including re-installing the sound card driver with no luck,
i think it is more a vista issue thou, but like you it works in spike and
elsewere, maybe if dell comes out with a new driver it will work but i don't
see any solution at this time unless maybe bying a cheap card to replace the
on-board, please keep me informed of developments as i contact my sister on
wlm .

Hi everybody,

I've got the same problem to. It seems that Vista, or Live Messenger (or the
combination of those) cannot "control" two sound devices in communication. I
have an USB headset in addition with my onboard soundcard. And I remember
that it worked well when I used my onboard card as sources (play and record
device).

Using another software like Skype, video et audio work well together, so
it's probably a Live Messenger bug.

Microsoft has to find the issue ;o)

Best Regards

Fabien

Hi all,
I finally got mine to work, i really don't know what caused it to
work, i had a couple of windows updates and also a new bios upgrade for my
9200, could be that i guess, i will see later if it will work with my
sister, but it did work with one other person, hope you find the solution
also.
You can get good advice if you contact www.supportlive.com.

All,

We've found the cause for an issue in Vista where the microphone/speaker
device will not work in Video Call (even though it works in Voice Call and
other applications).

For this particular issue, the work around is as follows:

- Launch the tuning wizard via Tools->Audio and Video Setup
- On Step 1: Speaker Setup, make sure the checkbox "Click here if you are
using headphones" is NOT checked.

We will be adding the fix into a future release.
