System: 'ASUS P5WDG2 WS Pro' (AD1888), 4 Gb RAM, Q6600
OS: Vista Ultimate 32 bit, clean installation, only ASUS Vista drivers

Problem: Soundmax will not install; no Soundmax tray icon, no Soundmax
functionality

ASUS support isn't any help.
Internet solutions found so far, didn't work either.

Please help!

Fulco Stiva,

I don't know whether Device Manager is detecting your audio device (under
Sound, video and game controllers). You should check there for any
indications of a problem before you do anything else. Lacking that
information, I suggest you try the following:

Try downloading and installing all updates available at the Microsoft Update
site, if you haven't already done so. Soundmax drivers are supposed to be
available there.

If Device Manager detects your sound device, but indicates that no driver is
installed, try having Device Manager search for an updated driver.

Another poster solved his Soundmax problem (on an Asus system) by the
following method:

"One thing you can do that i just found to get it working when nothing else
works is download the drivers from your oem or motherboard's site, and run
the setup file under compatibility mode for windows xp, i just tried it and
it went through fine and my sound actually works, hope this helps!"

By oem site he is referring to the manufacturer (HP, Dell, Compaq, etc.) of
the computer.

That's all I have. Post back if more information is needed.

My post a bit further down is about the same problem:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/com...sloc=en-us&p=1
I use Vista 64 bit and my device manager says that the sound-manager drivers
are installed but there is no icon in the taskbar or any other place where i
can change the settings.

Hi Freddy,

Thanks for your tips.

Yes, the Device Manager is detecting the Sound Device.
And I already installed all Windows Updates.

However I didn't succeed running Setup in (Windows XP) Compatibility
Mode. (Setup error: "The Operating System is not supported by this
software")

Fulco Stiva,

And then, you find the correct driver.

I can specify the problem a little bit more:

The drivers are installed.
There is a folder "Analog Devices" with a sub-folder Core and Soundmax.
In the task manager is a process called: smax4pnp.exe

The only thing missing is the Tray Icon.
So the Soundmax control panels (CP) are not available.

Does anybody know what the Registry entries for the settings mean?
(HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Analog Devices\smax4pnp\Setting)
How can I get the Soundmax CP to work, without the Tray Icon?

Fulco Stiva,

That file should be part of the audio drivers. See for more:

There is no control panel included in the Vista SoundMax drivers. At least
not yet. Most of the functionality in the control panel can be found by
using the Sound control panel in windows. Double click 'Speakers' in the
control panel to select your volume options or 'configure' from the front
page of the sound panel to configure speaker setup.

I found a driver (windows xp) with DTS support, and installed the package in
"windows xp sp2" compatibility mode.

It works!!!
Even the DTS support (DTS Interactive)!!

But I am rather disappointed by the Soundmax features.
My last motherboard used "Intel High Definition Audio".
I had far better control panels and settings.
I didn't expect this from the "Asus P5WDG2 WS Pro" board!!
