No Start Button after running Windows Update on XP Pro SP1

I have WU operating in automatic notification mode. When I logged in today I
was notified that 11 updates were ready to install. I gave the OK to install
and it proceeded normally except that for some reason the malicious spyware
update wasn't successful. After rebooting there was no Start button or quick
launch (nor could they be restored by resetting Properties. Also, everything
was missing from the Start Menu (which I could only make appear by clicking
the Windows key on my keyboard) except the "All Programs" icon which worked.
Thus I could get to the link to Internet Explorer, but that link was broken.
When I clicked that a window popped up asking me to map the link to the IE
executable, which I did. So, then I could begin the process of looking for
help.

I have pasted below a copy of today's WU log. I apologize for its length,
but there were a number of 0x codes scattered thu it and I thought they might
all be relevant.

This is a Windows XP Pro SP1 machine.

I have no answers or solutions, but can confirm that I had a similar
problem with XP SP1 (all critical updates but KB890047). If I install
KB890047 it removes everything from the desktop. Also the desktop is
locked. The only thing I can do is turn on the desktop toolbar and
navigate to remove KB890047. Then all returns to normal.

My problem is now resolved. I ran System Restore within Safe Mode.

I think in my instance the problem probably occurred not because the patches
were bad, but that they were not successfully installed. There were 18++
errors in my update log. You'd think WU would back out the patch if errors
occurred, or at least report the problem.
