Good advice, but I suspect it may involve both Windows Update and Google
Desktop. I had a similar experience.
I’m running Windows 2000 and IE 6.0.2800.1106 with updates SP1, Q833989, and
Q823353. I installed Google Desktop over a month ago and disabled it by right
clicking on my main toolbar and unchecking it on the dropdown. Forgot all
about it till yesterday, when I downloaded and installed 5 Windows updates
including Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1
(KB911567).
When I rebooted, the Google Desktop appeared and I again disabled it. It’s
reappeared from time to time since then without prompting, usually after
restarting my PC. But it’s also appeared when a link on a webpage opens a new
window. Once it appears in a window, even it I uncheck it, all websites I
visit after that, using the same window, display only the first letter in the
IE title bar. If I open another IE window after disabling Google Desktop in
the original window, however, the Google Toolbar isn’t there and full titles
appear in the IE title bar.
