No Update Notifications!

I set my Automatic Updates to "Notifiy me but don't automatically download or
install them." I did this around August 2006.

The last time I was notified to install updates was sometime mid-September.
There have been no notifications since then. On Windows Update, there are
quite a number of updates for me to obtain. But I was never notified of any
of them!

I don't hide inactive icons. What happened and how can I fix this?

I am using Windows XP Service Pack 2.

What is the status of your Automatic Updates Service in SERVICES.MSC?
What is the status of your BITS Service in SERVICES.MSC (Background
Intelligent....)

Any errors in Event Viewer log (EVENTVWR.MSC)?

Thanks for your reply, NewScience. Automatic Updates is set to automatic and
Background Intelligent Transfer Service is set to manual.

There are no error messages in the Event log for "Windows Update Agent" or
"NtServicePack."

The most recent entry contains:
---
Installation Ready: The following updates are downloaded and ready for
installation. To install the updates, an administrator should log on to this
computer and Windows will prompt with further instructions:
- MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978)
---

This one repeats for many days. I recall I approved the download before. But
it never seems to install (no notifications and they don't install with a
"patch shutdown").

Overall, my Automatic Updates is clearly broken. Is there a way to remove
and reinstall it?

I mean that I obtained MSXML hotfix through Windows Update, and I thought it
installed successfully.

All downloads are kept in:

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder. Look under the sub-folders
and you should see the MSXML4 download. There should be a update folder
associated with it. From that folder, you can run update.exe, and it should
install.

The downloaded/install attempts should have created a folder on your C:
Drive (if that is the only partition you have). It is a long folder name of
letters and numbers. In that folder is a msxml4.log file.
Look in there and see what it reported as far as errors.
