No updates for 3 years!!

To my extreme embarrassment I realise that although I have enabled the
automatic update setting, no updates have been downloaded onto my desktop
since 6 months after I bought this PC - which is 3 years ago. Luckily my
laptop is fine. I only discovered this as I need the SP2 for functionality
of my new Sony Erricsson mobile phone package. I have tried doing a manual
download of the components required (one of them is Windows Installer) but
they fail to download and the log shows just the cancellation icon, so I
can't gain any further info such as error message.
Can anybody help? I have really tried reading all the FAQs but get nowwhere.
Susan

Hello Susan,

Install Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (3.1.4000.2435) is availªble here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803

Locate your file msi.dll (with search if you are
not sure where it's located) and confirm what the version is, either from
it's properties or just passing your cursor over it. If it's not the
latest which is 3.1.4000.2435, then:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803/

Good luck

You can order the SP2 CD here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...efault810.mspx

While awaiting that go here:
http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showforum=89 and download AutoPatcher
XP. It has all the necessary updates/patches/fixes/etc since SP2 came out.
(It is a 300Mb download.)

Thanks Engel, I have tried your solution. However, I find I have 4 msi.dll
files, one of which is indeed the 3.1.4000.2435 version. I am also getting
the following error massage:
in the title box'Springfld_adv_daemon:WksCal.exe Entry point not found. '
Then the text says' The procedure entry point GetIUMS could not be located in
the dynamic link library MSDART.DLL'
Any ideas?

Thanks Jerry, I've ordered the CD. I tried to get the patches but just had
problems. I keep getting the error message about no GetIUMS that I have
elaborated in my message to Engel.
