I have an XP sp2 Home Edition, and I haven't been able to update anything in
18 months. I have done all suggestions including the bits corrections, and
that gives the error code of 998 not authorized to access memory. I know
this system is old, and needs to be replaced, but poor people got poor ways...

No updates in 18 months? Quite honestly, this machine should NOT be
connected to the internet or any networks, Terry.

Have you been without an anti-virus application or current anti-virus
definitions this long, too?

Terry, I work on computers in your situation several times a week. Read what
I go through by reading the Question at the bottom of page 5 on this
document.

Since I didn't see a document listed, that you were talking about, I will
explain myself a little better. I have a regularly updated antivirus AVG
that can't find anything amiss in a scan. I am not the actual user of this
system, it belongs to my daughter, and she hasn't had any luck getting a
Microsoft Technician to get it to work either. I was here and tried all the
items that are current in the Microsoft suggestion area that pertained to
this problem. I have suggested to try and save all files to an external
drive or disc collection, then start over and reinstall using the recovery
program. She doesn't have the OEM discs, as this didn't come with them
initially. It only has Drive D: for recovery. I'm ready for the
hair-pulling room already.

Avail yourself of the hidden Recovery partition to return the machine to
OOBE (like new) state, Terry.

Doing so will leave you with the equivalent of a "new computer" so also
