No updates are working. In Windows Updates I get error message 0x80072EE7.
No McAfee updates work, neither do those for Windows Defender or Adaware. I
have followed the troubleshooting guidelines in Windows Help e.g. ensuring no
fixed IP addresses in the hosts file. Internet is working fine apart from
that. Can anyone help please?

Operating System is...?

Things that have changed between the time it worked and now?
(example: Repair install, fresh install, etc...)

OpSys is XP Home Edition Version 2002 SP2
No fundamental things have changed; no fresh install, no repair, no hardware
installs.
All other functions and programs including internet appear to be working fine.

Ignore the title - it may fix your issues anyway:

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

Do all suggested methods with reboots in between...

Also - Uninstall McAfee, AdAware and Windows Defender for now. Leave (or
turn on) the Windows XP SP2 firewall enabled and for now - do _not_ allow
any exceptions. Also - while in this state (no AV, no active antispyware -
practice "extra" safe Internet browsing - only visit
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ in fact.

Once you can get Windows updates - install an AntiVirus software.
Truthfully - with common sense - that is all you should need above the
firewall...

Come back - let us know...

OK. Thanks for the info. I have uninstalled McAfee Security Centre and
re-booted. Interestingly, as I go to follow the link in "Method 2" to
download the Windows Update Agent it will not display the page, neither will
it even go to http://download.windowsupdate.com ("Internet Explorer cannot
display the web page")

The 'Windows Update' address is:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

What are your DNS settings?
Have a HOSTS file setup?

You say you cannot download this file:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/wi...gent30-x86.exe

Do you have another browser installed (it is theoretically possible your
Intrernet Explorer is hosed..)?
Try using something like Firefox or another computer to get the file...

Found it!! It was my DNS settings. For some reason they had fixed IP
addresses in there (main and alternative). Don't know how they got there -
probably from one of my sons games. Anyway compared settings to my other
PCs, set DNS to auto and now everything is working fine.
Many thanks for your help,
Regards,
Guy.
