I need to find some documentation that Windows Update does not work or at
least doesn't allow service pack downloads if your copy of Windows XP is not
legitimate.

My network manager has never heard of this, but I'm sure that I read it when
service pack 1 was released.

Anyone know where I can go for a reference?

The Windows Update website? Or use the good old phone and call Microsoft
directly.

Do a Google search. There were many comments in the regular and online media
stating that Microsoft would set SP2 up in such a way as to make any
illegal version incapable of being run if an attempt was made to upgrade to
SP2. So, not only will SP2 not install, it kills the illegal.

Have fun.

Michael;
The information is all over the place.
Some of the stolen keys will allow install of Service Packs and some
will not.

Why does it concern the manager?
Surely the manager does not allow stolen software in the facility?

See this link:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/invalpk.htm
The link at the top explains it a little.

WARNING:
if you DL the post mentioned above (before it was/will be cancelled)
be adviced that the posted "windows.crack" website tries to infect your PC
with malware....

Very irresponsible behaviour, dear Ruben.

Do you really think I keep track of all the online and print comments I saw
about this? Not hardly. But I did see it in more than one place.

The information is still wrong regardless of how many places published
it.
Attempting to install SP-2 will do nothing to the computer with an
illegal license other than not install.

Maybe, I wasn't clear.

I posted here because I have had difficulty finding documentation that
service packs don't work with pirated Windows. I did a Google search and
didn't find much. Maybe I was using poor keywords?

Also, my network manager wanted documentation just because he didn't know
about it and was interested on details. He does not plan to use pirated
Windows copies. The story is that we found a user that did have a pirated
Windows XP installed and I was explaining to my manager why we couldn't
install service packs.
