Machine summary: Win2K Pro, Automatic Updates set to run daily at 3am,
3GHz, 256MB, 15GB free space. User account is Power User, and the
Administrator account has a non-standard name. (This is typical of
desktops at this site, and we're not yet using SUS/WUS.) I often
launch Windows Update with Run As from my user account, which I'm
starting to think mightn't be a good idea.
After the other day's headlines, I checked (as usual) that the updates
had installed properly, only to find a list of Failed entries in the
Installation History. Uh-oh. A manual run of Windows Update gave me
"No Updates Were Installed" and a list of the failed updates. Uh-oh
again.
Googled heavily on this, and the likeliest tip seemed to be the KB
article "How To Reset Security Settings Back to the Defaults"
(
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;313222).
Nope, still knackered afterwards. Even heavier Googling coughed up a
note on manually extracting the WUTemp archives (at SUSserver forums,
http://forums.susserver.com/index.php?showtopic=2022), and after some
work I got KB834707 installed at least.
I repeated all this today for KB839645, and haven't had any reports
yet of failures on other machines here. My notebook entries might be
useful for anyone in the same situation:

Summary: all of the WUTemp\{...}\{...}-express.exe downloads refuse to
install (running as admin), but by manually extracting I've gotten two
of them to install by executing the tarred update.exe without further
ado, and suspect the rest'll run happily too.
The highly misleading error messages in steps 2 and 4 seem to indicate
that ownership is somehow confused: the archive executables are trying
to expand themselves, but can't (and report bogus reasons why).
Owner of Windows2000-KB839645-x86-ENU-express.exe is the
Administrators group ("Administrators (<host>\Administrators)").
Security has Full Control for Administrators and SYSTEM.
Permissions of WUTemp are different: owner is same, and security has
Full Control for Administrators and SYSTEM, but CREATOR/OWNER has all
Allow entries unchecked even though the detailed Permission Entry
shows all Allow entries checked. Uh. A possible reason there?
Any suggestions as to (a) how to batch the rest of these updates (I've
got OTHER work to do, dammit), and (b) how to avoid this situation in
future? (Logs available on request.)
Would be appreciated.
As would the public flogging of the moron who wrote this FPOS.
(Aside: aren't these the updates released for XP users a month ago?
Gee. Ta.)
thanks,
