No video during chkdsk

I'm trying to run chkdsk and it seems to be working except the screen is
completely blank - no progress of indicators of which keys to press, etc.
which makes things rather difficult. Is there any reason why this would
happen? I'm running Vista Ultimate 32-bit including all updates.
