Hi.
My computer has been reset back to the factory settings after major
problems. All drivers etc have been installed and are showing to be working
ok. However, i seem to have lost all my windows sounds! I have no startup,
shutdown, notification sounds etc, and no sounds in msn messenger or any
other messengers, although media player and other sounds seem to be fine.
I'm at a loss what to do next as i dont want to mess things up after working
weeks to get it all back running again.
Do i need to install other drivers? If so where would i go to get them?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

- Open control panel "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties"
- click tab "Sounds"
- set "Sound scheme" to "Windows default"
- click "Apply"
- try playing the sounds with the little player button (triangle pointing
right)

Hi Robin.
Thanks for your fast response.
Ive tried what you suggested, but i get: windows cannot play the sound
%system root %\media\windows xp shutdown.wav. Your soundcard may be in use.
Confusing to say the least as i'm not currently using any applications with
sound.

Looks like a problem with your sound sub-system installation. Can I suggest
that you ask this question in a more appropriate newsgroup/forum, as this
one is primarily to do with the Windows Update service, and we might not
have the right expertise to address your problem.

Have you tried updating your sound drivers from the sound card
manufacturer's web site?
