I have had a multitude of problems since yesterday morning. My operating
system is Windows 2000 Professional. My Mcafee antivirus alerted me that it
had found and cleaned a virus and suggested a full system scan. Upon
completion of the scan, there were 10 suspect files--six of which were
cleaned and four which could not be cleaned or deleted. They were put into
quarantine. My Mcafee Updates had been working (updated 4/27) but I noticed
that the most recently dated DAT files had not autoupdated from 5/6. I also
updated my adaware definitions and ran a full scan. It found over 200
critical objects and cleaned them. At some point during this fiasco, I
noticed that my windows updates icon ceased to appear and when I went to
Windows update, I got a blank screen with no options. The rest of the day
just went from bad to worse. I attempted to do a manual update of Mcafee so
that I could perform a completely up to date system scan but my Mcafee has
not been able to run. I get messages saying that the "security center' is
either missing components or that components are installed improperly". I
have followed all of Mcafee's online instructions, manually uninstalling
Virus scan and then attempting to reinstall it, etc. I don't have any idea
where to go from here (other than taking a hatchet to the PC). Can someone
help? In summary, I don't seem to have any capability to perform Windows
updates nor to run an antivirus scan. Thanks in advance.
