Nocturnal - I have the same exact problem and nobody seems to know the answer.

I have windows 2000 Pro completely patched and have never, ever even had 1
piece of spyware on my computer, so I dont think that has anything to do with
this problem. I use Norton corporate as my virus protection and Zone Alarm.
Other than that - I have nothing running and keep everything in great shape.
Windows update has worked great until this new version and now donwloads and
the install immediately fails. I am tired of hearing the administrator and
rights answer because there is only I account on my PC which is the admin
account so that isnt the problem.

Please post when you have found a fix and I will do the same. I am not
reformatting my computer over this

Hi Tbenson,

I have noticed that there are numerous posts regarding the 0x80240020 error,
failure to install downloaded updates, so I did a lot of searching and came
up with something that *may* be helpful. To make a short story long, I came
across the Aug 3 posting by Hugh Janblack in this thread:
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...2099a7052d1a38
to which mfene (who, in a separate thread, mentioned that he was running
WIN2K, and was having the 0x80240020 install failure on all Windows Update
downloads) replied that the fix worked for him. Unfortunately, he does not
mention whether it was having (and subsequently deleting) the
Notify_Disabled subkey, adding the missing Senslogn subkey and its data, or
both that fixed the problem. I did see in another thread that a portion of
Hugh's post was recommended to Nocturnal, to which Nocturnal replied that he
did not find a Notify_Disabled subkey.......but the mention of the Senslogn
subkey was not referenced in the reply that Nocturnal had received.
Soooooooo......perhaps you (and Nocturnal) should have a look and see if the
Senslogn subkey does exist and, if it does not exist, create the subkey and
add its data based on the values from a "working" 2K machine. Alternatively,
you could try creating a reg file and importing it into your registry
following the information in davidrm's Aug 1 posting in this thread:
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...8eb4ec349f5d99
Please note that the registry information in davidrm's post is from an XP
machine, and, since I am not currently running 2K on either of my machines,
I cannot test it out to tell you whether the same values are valid for a 2K
machine.........all I can say is that, on my 2 XP installs, I have exported
the pertinent registry key (SensLogn) prior to deleting the subkey in the
registry, rebooted, and tried twice (failing both times) to install a couple
of updates.......Windowsupdate.log file showed install failure error
0x80240020.........importing the exported SensLogn and rebooting solved the
install failure problem.

I already imported the SensLogon key. It still doesn't work.

Bummer :-( I had high hopes for that to fix the problem.
