non automatic updates

I have my updates set to "notify me but don't automatically download them and
install them" - however when I shutdown I have an icon showing that there are
downloads to install - can anyone tell me what is going on ?

So what happens when you go in and see what these updates are?
Are they ones you have already downloaded and installed?
