Non booting after SP1 install

I have just installed Vista SP1. On re booting I can only get as far as the
'Welcome' screen, the screen then goes black with a white mouse pointer. I
have reinstalled my graphics driver but no change.
I would be very grateful for any help that anyone can give.

Hi Carey - tried the 'Help' department but they weren't much help as I am in
the U.K., they just gave me a U.K. phone number. This was of little use since
they refused help on the basis that my software package is OEM and I am not a
'registered builder', apparently this means I don't get help even though my
machine was working perfectly until I installed SP1. I can't even restore my
machine to pre-SP1 as the restore dates in System Restore begin with the
installation of SP1 (I am able to boot up in 'Safe Mode').

I would also like to add that I am outraged by Microsoft's cavalier manner,
for the last 15 or 20 years I have always defended Microsoft against the many
mudslingers but today I am joining them!

Hi, and thanks for the comments. Yes it is an original authentic MS OEM disk.
I will explain how I came by it. My original system had 'XP' installed on it
and I later decided to join the 'Vista brigade' and bought a 'Vista' upgrade
package. When the beta version of SP1 came out a few weeks ago I tried
installing it and everything went pear-shaped. I contacted MS who told me
that I could not get support because I now had an upgrade pack and not the
original pack that came with my machine and they would only help if I had a
'full' package. I decided that if I had to reformat my hard drive to install
a full pack I may as well buy more RAM and a larger hard drive while I was at
it, I was told that this would make me eligable to legitimately buy the OEM
pack. I have now come to the conclusion that MS are like insurance companies
and have a let-out clause for every conceivable situation.

On the lighter side, out of sheer desperation more than anything I did some
repeated restore/repair's and I now appear to be back to a slow but
never-the-less working pre SP1 system and that's where I intend staying until
perhaps I get around to something that will release me from the clutches of
Microsoft, Linux maybe?

That's flat out wrong! Call back and quote the page, pointing out that no
limitations or restrictions are found.
