Non-Installation Revisited

Every day for the past couple of weeks, when I start up my Win98 system, I
get a notification that I have critical updates available. They are always
the same two: "Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 - Service
Pack 1 (KB837009)", and "823559 Security Update for Microsoft Windows".

One respondent gave me a link on how to "fix" the problem, but the link
indicates the "fix" is for XP-Home & XP-Pro .... and I'm running Win98-SE.
I'm VERY hesitant about mucking about in the Registry if there is ANY
question that what I'm doing isn't precisely accurate.

Any further help would be greatly appreciated!

MrBill,

Download the updates and save them to your HD. Close IE and either
temporarily disable your antivirus program or boot to Safe Mode and
install them . KB823559 will NEVER install if the NetMeeting folder
has been moved off of the C:\ drive, uninstalled, or files have been
deleted from it's folder.

Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1
(KB837009)

For KB823559 ( MS03-023: Buffer overrun in the HTML converter could
allow code execution ) you will have to download the update from
Windows Update using the Windows Catalog :

Use " Method 2: Add the Windows Update Catalog to Windows Update "

Thanks - I followed all your instructions, but it didn't work. Update
DB823559 *seemed* to install - at least, I got the EULA screen, and the
Indicator Bar moved rapidly across as it would during a normal install - but
it apparently didn't take.

I got the KB837009 downloaded, but attempts to install IT returned the error
message,
"This update requires Outlook Express 6.0 Service Pack 1 to be installed".

Return visits (after rebooting the system twice) still say I need to install
both 'critical updates'. I'm beginning to wonder - if they're so critical,
why do so many people seem to be having trouble with -non-installing updates?

FWIW -
In the "add/remove" programs listing, I found an entry for an update with
the number 823559 - and removed it. Ran the downloaded file I had saved to
disk per your earlier instructions, and it seemed to work. A return visit to
the Windows Update site now shows only ONE critical update needed ... the one
that says I need Outlook Ex 6.0 Svc Pk 1 to be installed.

So, where do I get *THAT* file?

Thanks again!
