I am considering Norton 360. I have now LiveOneCare (which my trial ends in
30 days..)

Any thoughts if Norton is better. My esperience in the past with Norton
products is that Nortons provide very good protection and utilities, but
they tend to be very large program, and make PC slugish... Norton 360 is
double the cost of LiveOne Care....

Thanks,
mac

Both those products are awful and neither is recommended. Recommended
for antivirus protection: NOD32, Kaspersky, or Avast if you want free.
The Windows Firewall meets our needs here and will for most people. I
haven't tried a third-party firewall on Vista so I don't have a
recommendation for you there.

Needless to say - conflict of interests.

So I'd consider anyone except from this company.

N360 works better than Live One Care. In Vista(ensure if N360 it is the designed for Vista version). If buying retail, check the box... A higher learning curve than most for configuring the included firewall but significantly easier than Vista's Windows Firewall. The N360 included NAV operates much similar to earlier versions in configuration and update. The footprint for N360 is significantly smaller than prior full version Symantec security products.

Prior versions of Symantec products do not function as well in Vista and in many cases for some in XP. That experience is usually the foundation for a variety of negative comments on Norton products. It would also be hard to believe that *almost* anyone voicing concern based on a prior Norton product has actually installed and used N360 in a Vista environment.

Live One Care historically is in the bottom of the list with respect to success and prevention, though one's surfing, file sharing, and email habits contribute to the success or lack of for any security program.

For Vista....free versions Avast and AVG are the choice of many. Fee based versions most would suggest Kaspersky, BitDefender, NOD32.

I've N360 and Kaspersky separately running on two Vista Ultimate retail RTM installs and use Avast on a dual boot XP/Vista Pre-RTM Ultimate installation.

Imo, if new to Vista choose AVast and get comfortable with Vista, if you need something more capable or have a desire to play a greater role in managing the security options then move up to the fee-based versions.

Good luck.

Thirded. Norton's crap. I can't really comment on MS's products but I look
at is this way: They can't even secure the OS so I certainly don't feel
comfortable using their security products. And also the fact they are
charging for problems that shouldn't exist in the first place just blows me
away.

My view is that *anything* Norton is the worst possible choice. There
are lots of other freeware security products that are much better.

Nod32 has a 30 day free trial if you would like to try it out.

LiveOneCare is inadequete IMHO.
On the hundred or so machines I maintain, I have tried Avast, AVG, Clamwin
and NOD32.
Each has it's good points, and all seem to provide decent protection.
I wouldn't let anything from Norton on my network!
When I go out to repair people's machines, I see more problems caused by
Norton than any other company... besides MS! LOL

I'll echo most everyone else's response: stay the f**k away from Norton.
Can't speak to LiveOneCare. I've been using Avast for months and am pretty
impressed. There are plenty of other good/great AV programs out there. Just
stay away from Norton.
