Hi all.
I bought a new laptop, HP DV5 1009tx. Windows Vista home premium,sp1. Now
my question is; Norton security centre subscription has run out and expired
a week ago. I cant afford to get a new Norton subscription yet, so would you
recommend that i use AVG free version instead for a while till i get new
Norton? Will i have drama with Vista if i change Anti Virus software? Will i
have drama changing back from AVG to Norton once i get subscription? Also
would anyone recommend another good free anti virus? this is my first laptop
with Vista, and i cant help but notice how much people are complianing about
Vista. Its been great so far for me.
TIA
Roland.

Install Windows OneCare, and you'll not have to
worry about those issues. You can try it FREE
for ninety (90) days. This is a brand new version
and is very robust! Uses very little system resources!

With the excellent Windows OneCare package, there is
no need to install a multitude of different security software.

OneCare includes:

-- An excellent antivirus application
-- An excellent firewall application
-- An excellent antispyware application
-- Automatic system tune-ups
-- Automatic hard drive defrag
-- Checks for updates to be sure they are installed
-- Schedules automatic backups of important files
-- New version 2.5 just released - designed to work
exceptionally well with Windows Vista & XP.
-- All-in-one convenient, easy to install application

That's like hiring the wolf to guard the chicken coop.

Forget Norton even if you can afford one thousand copies..

Use Avast 4 Home (free) or if you must pay for anti-virus, use NOD32..

For spyware, use Windows Defender (free) and Malwarebytes (free) for when
some things break through..

My .0

I've been using Live OneCare since it was in beta. I've been ver
satisfied with the protection, plus if any issues arise, you hav
telephone tech support. It's a great program with a great pric
(includes up to 3 PC's included in the annual price)

One other option would be to scrap MS completely and go Linux - then you
won't even need to worry about anti-virus software.

Norton and Live One Care are both bloatware.
They try to be everything to everybody, and fail in all respects.
Use seperate, non-bloated applications.
Below is what I use, with no problems at all.

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Avast Anti-Virus is XP and Vista compatible (32bit and 64bit Versions),
FREE, auto-updating, and a low resources user of your computer.
And, only have 1(one) Anti-Virus installed / running on your computer at any
one time..
Conflicts may occur if you have more than 1(one).

http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

Spybot Search & Destroy 1.6 is a very good, FREE Anti-Spyware Program.
Download, install, update, and immunize your System with it.
Then SCAN with it.
Update it, and scan your System once a fortnight.

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

SpywareBlaster 4.1 is a non-intrusive, FREE Anti-Spyware Program that runs
in the background (no scanning by you!).
SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of many so-called spyware, adware
and malware programs by disabling the CLSIDs of popular spyware ActiveX
controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage
Update it once a fortnight, and let it do its work in the background!

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Malwarebytes is as the name says, a Malware Remover!
For the Free version scroll down their page to either download from
Download.com, or Major Geeks.com

It seems that you are a little out of date. Norton 2009 is excellent and
unbloated. (My opinion and that of the large majority of independent
reviewers.)

Norton has been so bad for so long, it's going to take a LOT of convincing
before I allow it anywhere near my LAN.
Right now, you can be fired for installing anything from Symantec on a
company computer...
