AVG and Avast have free editions. NOD32 is good if you don't mind spending
a bit of money.

What about not bothing at all as AV slows down the system and the ISP
has a firewall

By the way i fined this a very good newsgroup and like the way people
answer the questions for newbies like me and expert's.

You are totally insane if you do not use an anti-virus in this day and age.
YOU will not be able to pick what is good or bad.

Norton and the like slows down your system as it uses about 1/3 of the
system resources, and wants to take control of the Security Centre, which
most people unfortunately let it do

I use, and have been using for years, Avast Free 4 Home anti-virus. It is
totally compatible with Vista, automatically updates, and is not a resources
hog, and is an exceptional FREE program(better than the paid for ones).
Forget AVG.

Firewalls are not designed to stop computer viruses. You need an antivirus
program in addition to the firewall.

I have personally been running AVG free for years and have had no
problems...works great with Vista....You will find answers saying that Avast
is better and some will say AVG is better,,I happen to like AVG better
myself but there is nothing wrong with choosing Avast...Kind of a wishy
washy answer but both are excellent FREE programs........Just my 3 cents

I'm using Avast. It does not appear to be a system hog, unlike Symantec
(Norton). AVG also seems like a good AV program. The only thing I didn't
like about it was that, at the time anyway, it did not automatically
download virus signature files.

Lang, why I don't like FREE AVG is because a customer insisted I put it on
his computer, which turned out to have 395 viruses, etc!

You know the story, turn off system Restore, Safe Mode, run it; it left 119
still on it.

FREE AVG only attempts to clean files, does not delete files.

It will work as long as it is installed on a clean machine; but, not an
infected one.
And Grisoft are slow in issuing update definitions

Avast me hearties!

Cheers Lang

I personally don't believe that there is a "free lunch" thing in the world
which applies to almost everything. Doesn't mean I am rich - not at all by
all means.

Cost is always there and it's just when and how much one is going to pay.
I'd rather to know before rather than after

I do not agree I just got a free Box but I stuff the it as I am
unfamiliar with downloading and up zipping files. I am going for free
dinner tonight the girl friend gets all the money leaves me broke.
