norton ghost and vista

The older norton ghost normally make a copy of your entire HD. I see
they have improved much since back in the day. w/ norton 12 can I make
an image of everything except my xp so when I install vista, I can just
run the image to restore all of my programs and files?

For Vista, you don't need ghost. Vista has a backup system built in which
will backup folder/files or the whole drive. It works extremely well.

This is true for Vista Ultimate, but not for Vista Home Premium Jerry.

Vista Home Premium cannot make an image of the system, which is a real pitty.

I am using "Acronis True Image Home Edition" for that purpose and it works
extremely well.

If you mean make an image of what is installed under XP and use that to
reinstall under VISTA (or rather to avoid reinstalling but jusst to copy)
then I doubt very much if that will work.

Also by definition an image is an image and when you reverse it onto a
drive you get an image -- I don't think it will just add the image onto
the installation that is there.

I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong and you can correct me if I've
misunderstood the bit I quoted.

I used Norton Ghost to make an image of my disk without XP.
After I had installed Vista, I installed all of the other programs
that were on my computer before the upgrade from the image file.
I did not copy them, I recovered them.

All of the programs worked.

I still don't understand this -- so what was on the disk? The files to
install the programs you wanted?

I could understand, with GHOST being able to recover files from within
the image, that you could be able to extract the files needed to
install the applications but is that what l'ecus wants to do -- and why
bother to do it this way?

What I was saying before was that if he was making an image of
installed applications then restoring those to the new VISTA drive
would not write their information to the registry etc.

jerry, I'm confused, so did you just do a backup and then ran the
recovery on vista? if not what steps did you take to get an image of all
files and programs w/o having it copy the OS? I don't see that as an
option in version 12

The disk contained a complete image of the drive minus XP.
I don't know how the processed worked, but it did.
