I am also getting the same problem installing these updates (the same list).
It does not seem to matter if I install them on shutdown or by running the
online Microsoft Update facility. When I try, my svchost.exe always bombs out
with an application error (instruction at 0x745f2780 referencing memory at
0x00000000). I have run my Norton health-check utilities and there seems to
be no problems with my registry etc. Anyone with any clues please shout up!

Disable Norton's AV auto scan and then try it. Also, make sure your temp
files are emptied.

Thanks for you reply, but problem persists.
I disabled everything I could find in Norton (not just Antivirus, but
firewall as well and everything else). I also made sure all the temp files
are deleted. And also tried restarts after doing so. svchost.exe still bombs
(actually, svchost.exe bombs with the same error message on restart even
before attempting to do the updates and before the logging in procedure has
completed). Carrying out certain tasks (such as scanning for Windows updates
or running the Norton scans) causes the svchost.exe to be restarted, but it
quits every time with the same error.

At this stage, I am looking at a complete reinstall - something I really
don't want to do because of the amount of software I have on my computer. I
have only just recently upgraded to XP from Win2K (a complete reinstall onto
a fresh disk). I really don't want to repeat it all. Anyone know where the
nearest Apple store is to me? :-(

SOLVED!
I found a great fix for the svchost.exe problem.
STV: You may try it yourself if you are having the same problem as me.

If found the link to the solution was posted on this very forum, and can be
found at http://swigartconsulting.blogs.com/t.../07/index.html

I can now login without any svchost.exe problems, and my Windows Update
seems to be running fine again.

Not only will I NOT now have to reinstall Windows, but it also seems it will
be a little while longer before I have to visit the Apple store. Steve Jobs
will be upset!

Try this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903774/
It helped me :-)

George's comment as to fixing it WORKED just GREAT, after many attempts to
use the automatic update from the Microsoft website...
Thanks George, you're an MVP in my books.
It seemed all the Microsoft Office security updates wouldn't work for me ~
only the Windows Defender one ever updated successfully.
I went to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903774/ as George described, and
saw where the service he mentions was DISABLED. How it got that way I'll
never know! I changed it to MANUAL and tried the updates again, and all's
well.
Thanks again to George, and this forum...I'm IMPRESSED AGAIN. This forum
really works! That's the 10-11th time I've found answers to operating system
problems!

Sorry you cant get to the site, I was just on it and got it up nice.
Anyway it pretty much says this:

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
1. Determine the status of the Office Source Engine service. To do this,
follow these steps:a. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then
click OK.
b. In the list of services, double-click Office Source Engine.
c. View the option that appears in the Startup type list.

2. If the startup type is set to Disabled, change the startup type to
Manual. To do this, click Manual in the Startup type list, and then click OK.
3. Try to install the Office Update packages again.

Hope you get some help out of this.
