not receiving messages/messages wont send

i have recently bought a dell laptop with windows vista and finally managed
to download windows live messenger 2008 but have been having a number of
problems with it. my messages to my contacts are not being received by them
and messages from my contacts to myself i do not receive them either but it
does not give me the ''you message has not been delivered'' message, there is
nothing wrong with my internet connection, i have run a number of virus
checks but nothing has solved the problem yet...PLEASE HELP AS IT IS VERY
ANNOYING!

hmm seems noone answered this reply ... I have been tryign to get an answer
to this for over a month now.. Its totally annoying and crazy
