Hello...I am receiving 'notiification' of new critical updates but when I go
to Windows Update site, the screen just stays in "Checking for software
updates.....etc" mode, and goes no further. I am running W 98 SE, and a few
days back I updated my security software. I uninstalled Norton Anti-Virus
2002 & the Personal Firewall 2003 and installed Norton Internet Security 2004.
Previously I've had no problem with the Firewall, but I'm inclined to think
that it is all related somehow....is there anybody there that could help me
in any way at all please,..

It is likely that the new Norton Internet Security needs tweaking. It needs to recognize v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com as a "OK" site.

I suggest you lookup an article at Symantec's website (link below) in order to place some Microsoft Windows Update websites into NIS' advanced privacy control. They show 1 of the sites, but I'll recommend you add all of these:

www.download.windowsupdate.com

v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

windowsupdate.microsoft.com

download.windowsupdate.com

Don't get spooked or sidetracked about the article title. It's the method of tweaking the "privacy control", as listed in the paragraph "solution".
Be careful in cas this link wraps ---- here it is
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...c=sg#_Section1

Follow the directions for your version of NIS.
