Not So Easy Transfer using Flash Drive

Seems there is not much guidance to help move data from XP to Vista using
Easy Transfer and a USB Flash. Following the step-by-step transfer guidance
leaves you hanging after transfer of the first USB Flash drive MIG files from
XP to Vista. The transfer software then asks for the second USB drive, but in
my case there is only one USB Flash drive and all the data to be transferred
is on it! Unfortunately there is no way of exiting the Easy Transfer program
other than using the close "X" button, at which time the software warns that
if you exit all transfers will be aborted. So no transfer is accomplished
after all this effort - UGH!
Is there a third party program that can actually make transfer from XP to
Vista easy?

your drive must be full and out of space to continueto move files, asking
for another drive!!! try smaller transfers

Thanks for the suggestion, but the Flash drive was only half full, so not out
of space.

Hello Lance,

One other way is to create a store on your local machine and copy the file
over to your USB drive. This would be using the Local Disconnected method
provided by Windows Easy Transfer.

Well if you have the room it should work, i have not had the problem ,worked
well for my needs. you could set up a temp network or laplink the computers
together

Thanks Vik: That is esentially what I did. I just removed all the Easy
Transfer software that Vista loaded on my USB Flash drive, zipped my files on
my XP and copied them to the Flash Drive, then via tennis shoe net plugged
the Flash drive into the USB port on the Vista Box. Then I copied the large
zip file to a temp directory on Vista and unzipped the files (mostly
documents and graphics files) to my directories of choice.
As and added benefit, the zip files were about a factor of three smaller
than the Easy Transfer MIG files so I could transfer three times as much in
each of these copies from XP to Vista. Thus even if I was able to get Easy
Transfer to work using USB Flash, it would still be about three times faster
using the above zip protocol vs. use of the Easy Transfer tools.
I further copied the whole hidden folder containing the XP Outlook Express
..dbx files to a directory on my Flash drive, then after plugging the USB
Flash drive into the Vista box imported them into Windows Mail - again
without use of the "not so easy tranfser" software.
Since Easy Transfer does not copy programs from one box to another (and
rightly so) after a week trying to make it work moving data files, graphics
files, and documents leaves me with the thought that maybe the Easy Transfer
Software and the $44 Easy Transfer cable (if it reaches) are only good for
the simplest of transfers. But if it is so simple why not just do it using
the above zip file method and save $44 US.

Hello Lance,

Thanks for your feedback and details on how you were able to transfer your
data. Windows Easy Transfer provides the ability to search your machine and
pick up user data, Application and System Settings which is something WinZip
cannot do. Also, one would need to know where all these files are in add
these (and even have a working knowledge of Email files, contacts, etc there
are tons of users that don't have the technical knowledge on completing this
task. Windows Easy transfer provides a single and easy solution for getting
this accomplished.

One thing I wanted to mention was that from my previous email, I had
recommended a different migration method from the steps you followed. I
recommended that you use WET to create the store onto your local machine and
then copy the store to the USB drive. This would allow your data and settings
to be also included to one store.

The Easy Transfer Cable is the easiest solution in getting your data
migrated from one PC to another. In a wipe and load scenario it allows you to
test your Vista machine quickly and then decide if you want to wipe or
re-purpose your old box.
