I just solved the very same problem for a friend and posted my success msg
here yesterday (see below for the thread) not to boast but hopefully to help
others.
I hope this info helps you - I am not expert, don't even have Vista myself,
but found the "Safe Mode - System Restore to a date prior to the problem
arising" method solved the problem and allowed us to login to Vista as
normal.
Colin's explanation of what you saw in Safe Mode was good - when I got to
that stage and just saw Safe Mode in all 4 corners and nothing else, I felt
dismay, BUT, after some short time the "larger than usual" desktop did
appear and I was able to manoeuvre to System Restore and choose an earlier
date to restore to (successfully)
Try it again and see if it will work for you also, it is the most painless
way to do it, if it will work for you.
