Will not update Vista on shutdown - stuck on 1 of 9

My computer is trying to update Vista on shutdown but it's stuck on 1 of 9
all night... I reboot the computer but when I shutdown goes directly to
update and gets stuck in 1 of 9 .

I have to reset the computer to re-gain control of it. How can I get the
update to update? OR clear it off and start again or tell it not to do
this update? I tried clearing the check boxes in Windows update, but it
is passed this point and just want to perform the update and get stuck for
ever.....

When you rightclick the offered update, the drop down will include the
option to hide the update.
