Not a Valid Bookmark File

Hi there,

Have upgraded to IE7 on a 2nd XP computer. I tried importing the bookmarks
from IE7 on the 1st XP computer by exporting the favorites and then
e-mailing them to myself. Problem is, I get the message saying the import
was successful, but it is then followed by the message in the subject line.
Therefore, not successful as nothing imports.

Any ideas on how to get around this? I also tried the same thing from IE6
on another system (Windows ME). Same problem.

Couldn't find anything in the Knowledge Base so hoping someone might have an
idea on how to solve this. By the way this is on XP Pro SP2 with all
updates applied.

Thanks so much!

Hi there,

Here are the first three lines from the bookmark.htm file as opened in
Notepad.

<!-- saved from url=(0022)http://internet.e-mail -->
<!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1>
<!-- This is an automatically generated file.

Hope this helps!

Make a copy, then try removing the first line. Then try importing from it.

Hi,
I have a similar problem as reported below, only the first three lines in
the exprted bookmark file reads:
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
<!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1>

This is a file which was exported by Exploerer 7.0, and I try to import it
into Explorer 7.0 on another computer. I tried to delete first line, and it
did not complain about the file, but no bookmarks appeared in the Favourites
list.
Any further suggesions?

Hi there,

I copied the file, removed first line. Sorry to say no change. Exactly the
same problem.

Any more ideas much appreciated.

Thanks!

I'm a bit confused.
You refer to both Bookmarks and Favourites.
Do you have a BT Yahoo toolbar in IE7 (hence Bookmarks)?

Not too sure about this second bit but thought I'd mention it:
You refer to IE7 in both cases but the second line in your file mentions
Netscape, I thought that was Firefox.

Sorry, realise (Netscape) comment below also refers to BT Bookmarks.
This is the bit that confuses me:

"I tried importing the bookmarks from IE7 on the 1st XP computer by
exporting the favorites...."

Hello again,

Problem now solved, but in a roundabout way. As I couldn't get any of the
favorites/bookmarks files to import without receiving the error message in
the subject line, I eventually did the following and it worked.

In FireFox 2 on my Intel iMac I exported the bookmarks to my desktop and
then e-mailed the bookmarks file as an attachment over to my XP computer.
I saved my bookmarks file to the desktop on the XP computer.
As they still wouldn't/couldn't import into IE7, I installed FireFox 2 on my
XP computer.
I imported into Firefox the bookmarks file that I had e-mailed. (No problem
there.)
Now I exported the file from FF back to my desktop and then changed the name
to "bookmarksff" on my desktop.
Next I opened IE7. I tried importing the bookmarksff.html file into IE7.
SUCCESS!

I don't know why IE7 wouldn't import any version of a bookmarks/favorites
file without giving the error message. This was the only thing that worked.

One thing that might make a difference... Note that IE6 was installed prior
to the Windows Update. It had only the default bookmarks as this was a
newly-formatted hard drive. If I had imported my bookmarks/favorites into
IE6 I don't think I would have had this problem.

Hope this helps someone else who might encounter this issue.
