When trying to change my display picture or add a new emoticon from an
animated GIF, I cannot do so. Error message says it is not a valid image
file. This worked just fine in MSN Messenger prior to upgrading to Live
Messenger. Anyone else having the same problem?

The files are the same I've used in previous versions. In fact, I can email
an animated GIF to someone else, have them create an emoticon out of it, IM
it to me, and I can right-click on it and select Add...that works. It just
doesn't work on my machine - emoticons nor display image.

I am also having this same issue. It happens when I try and add both a
display picture or new emoticons...doesn't matter what image type I try they
all come back as invalid.

Paint can open em all fine as well as a number of other image applications
that I have tried. I've tried BMP, JPG and GIF all witht he same result and
on 2 different machines...have also tried uninstall/re-install as well as
this suggestion I found which suggested the image store was damaged:
_http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.messenger/browse_thread/thread/beec7ef0ec64eed5/82db71acb5187b90

not sure what to do now other than uninstalling it :P

Any help here?

I was also getting same problem.
I have tried it many times by the same way.
And got success once.
After that I am not getting success but I am sure if I try 10-20 times once it will add the image.

Just log out from messanger and exit messenger by right-clicking on Messenger icon on Task Bar then re-run the messenger from Start -> All Programs-> Windows Live ......
try uploading photo.
If it failed repeat the process from sign-out.

Anyway this is not the obvious solution but if you need to upload you photo once only it will help.
