Motherboard came with Avance AC'97 Codex drivers. The update you are providing when synchronizing with MS Update is an AC'97 Codex driver from another vendor which is incompatible and causes the sound card to malfunction.

Computer is an Emachines T2200 and what I believe is a LV7MM type board. Windows update describes the updated driver as "C Media AC97 Audio Device -C Media Electronics Corp"

I don't think that MS would intend to offer drivers which disables devices such as sound cards. this is why I am bringing to your attention. Fortunately I have access to the original set of driver to restore sound card functionality.

No experienced user in their right mind will install driver or hardware
updates offered by Windows Update, PH.

In the future do not install drivers from Windows/Microsoft Update.
Instead get drivers directly from the hardware manufacturer.
