Notebook computer - display turns off after 15 minutes, want it to stay on , how??

Running Windows Vista Ultimate, on an HP DV9500CTO Pavilion notebook
computer. Brand new computer, having problems:

Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am
actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on
is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to
sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email.

Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On
Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On
battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts
off while I am working.

What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd
intervals?

If it's brand new then ask HP for a replacement or your money back.

I could ask HP for a replacement, but that is quite a hassle, and this seems
like a Vista power management or video issue, and not a hardware issue. I
also have a desktop computer running Windows Vista Ultimate and I have never
been able to get the screen saver or 'turn off display' to work properly.
When the screen goes blank, it will not come back on no matter what I do,
short of rebooting. However, with a desktop computer the solution is
simple - I disabled all screen savers, 'turn off display' options, etc., and
when I am not at the computer, I flip the power switch on my two monitors.
With a notebook, it is not quite that simple, as there is no separate power
button for the screen. BTW, if it matters, I am running x64 on the notebook
computer.

Its unlikely to be a Vista issue as it works on loads of laptops as
expected.
It could be a driver issue in which case HP is your first port of call as
you should always try the manufacturer of the notebook for drivers first as
they sometimes do odd tweaks to make their notebook different to a generic
white box notebook.
If its not a driver issue that HP can fix then its a duff notebook or
something you have loaded that is interfering.

Do you run the same add on software on both?
Does the problem happen before you install anything?

Did it come with x64?
I haven't seen many notebooks with enough RAM to make it worth the extra
pain myself.
I bet that means HP won't have any drivers for it and generic drivers can be
a bit problematic on notebooks IME.
