Notepad Nonsense!

I am a student and while using Vista for internet classwork (Blackboard) I
tried to open an assignment and ended up with a notepad document full of
symbols and randomly placed text. I tried changing the font, but to no avail.
The document apprears to be saved as a .doc, as I read on other postings, but
I can get no further. If I email the link to myself, I can see the preview in
yahoomail, and it makes sense, but when I download and open it is the
symbols. How can I save theses files and view them as intended?

Melanie;
Do you have Microsoft Word or some other similar word processor?
You need to open the file with the same or compatible program as created.

Notepad and wordpad cannot properly handle .doc files. Try Microsoft Works
word processor or Office Microsoft Word that sometimes comes with a Vista
package or some other word processor that can edit .doc files.

Thanks everyone,
I saved teh file to my hard drive, then opened in Word. I don't know that
this is the most efficient way, but it did work. Thanks!

Melanie, it sounds as though Blackboard is not Vista-compatible. Someone
posted about Blackboard issues earlier this week (perhaps it was you?).
You've found a usable workaround, but you might also want to contact the
school webmaster about problems using Blackboard with Vista. It will be
up to him/her to check with Blackboard and do any updates but at least
you can let him/her know about the issues.

..doc is a microsoft word format, not plain text. Try opening it with
Wordpad/Write.
