After automatic updates yesterday any attempt to run something gets either
Windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close (explorer.exe
AppVer:6.0.2900.2180 ModName: ntdll.dll ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset
00018fea) or Internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.
This happens no matter what I try to run, Word - Control Panel, etc., except
for task manager via ctl-alt-del. Normal shutdown just hangs.

Are there any ideas as to what I can do?

Thanks

Use System Restore to return your machine to the state prior to the updates.

Go to Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs and remove the most recent
updates.

I had the same problem, however without being able to run explore.exe NOTHING
would open, including system restore. The only solution I had was a reinstall
of XP.
I did a complete reinstall on a freshly formatted drive and as soon as it
added the post SP2 security patches, the same problem surfaced. I reformatted
and reinstalled again, this time I left out two updates when getting the
system back KB890830 and KB896727 and it is running without a hitch. I'm too
scared to try and figure out which of the two are the culprit, but I suspect
it is the IE cumulative security patches.

Good luck with that.
