Notification but no download

Have Win Updates set to notify but not download.

Lately, when I choose to download, the update icon disappears and
updates are not downloaded.

At first I thought the server was busy (although I usually click
download as soon as notified) but this has happened a number of times
now.

Do I need to tweak anything?

I meant to add that if I go to the main update page, I can download
without any problem and the auto update icon duly appears (belatedly) in
the system tray telling me downloads are available to install.

On which OS? ; )

I had that symptom on one machine while XPsp3 was downloading.
It looked as if it was getting stuck in a Suspended state and never resuming
automatically. Hence I kept resuming it manually until I finally got a notification
about it.

Another (Vista) user tried the same technique and found some broken downloads
that way. Once they were cleaned up the AU feature was seen to be working
normally again.

To try the same approach with your symptom switch to a cmd window
(aka Command Prompt) and enter:

bitsadmin /list /allusers /verbose

In case they are just coming through slowly you could alternatively use:

bitsadmin /monitor /allusers

to see that. (Press Ctrl-c to stop the monitoring.)

Otherwise use the WindowsUpdate.log to diagnose your symptom.
(Ref. KB902093)

Good luck

Absent any serious numerical Errors in your windowsupdate.log, you may be
seeing a delay caused by excessive demand on the servers ("Update is not
allowed to download due to regulation"). It can take up to 7 days or more
for all Automatic Update users to get new updates when so many have been
released.

You can try downloading/installing the updates via Windows/Microsoft Update:
Understand that by doing so, you're pushing all the Automatic Updates users
further back in the queue (which may explain, at least in part, why
Automatic Updates hasn't brought them in for you yet).
