Maker 7 it wants to know where
the .msi file is. I do not know where this file is unless it is on a hidden
partition that Acer uses to store Vista
recovery info on. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I had the exact same problem.
I FIXED IT THOU!!!
(Please note...I did not wipe off the version that would not work on the laptop. If you do that, it might not install the update).
The version I have on my Acer laptop is obviously not the full version but a one very basic one that is installed on many many computers (oem) so you cannot upgrade to it etc to fix it. I did not have backup discs and i tried various things that have been mentioned here. I finally eneded up here: nticorp.com/en/us/support

Note: The url address above has not been copied exact from the web browser because this stupid forum thing would not let me submit more that 25 characters at a time. So you will have to play around with the above information in google or web browser address bar yourself. (good luck)
But it's pointing to the right place...
where I selected the NTI cd dvd 7 Gold download, which is the one on my laptop and BINGO! It downloaded it to my desktop, I ran it and it took me through the installation process. Now I can use it.
Obviously, what's happened, is a file has been damaged and this has just put everything right. Please note...I did not wipe off the version that would not work on the laptop. If you do that, it might not install the update.
